Memorial Day is right around the corner and that means many of our patients at North Jersey Podiatry are going to be thinking about heading to the Jersey Shore and other fun summer activities. Now’s the time to take a look at your feet and address any concerns you may have about their appearance. Covered up in heavy socks and shoes all winter makes it easy to ignore certain podiatric problems that suddenly become way more obvious in summer’s more open shoe styles. Below are common issues we treat frequently at this time of the year:
Bunions—easily identifiable by the telltale bump protruding from the side of the big toe, bunions are a progressive condition and that means that when you put your sandals on this summer, the bump may appear bigger than ever. Bunions are usually the result of a faulty biomechanical issue that causes the joint of the big toe to drift out of place. It can be exacerbated by the wearing of narrow-toed shoes and high heels. Eventually, a bunion will not only appear unsightly, it will start to cause real difficulty in wearing shoes. A bunion makeover can improve appearance and comfort.
Athlete’s Foot—you may have picked it up at the gym this winter or maybe at the nail salon, but this fungal infection shows itself with an itchy, red rash, and flaky skin. Left untreated, it may even form weeping blisters or become infected. Athlete’s foot is also highly contagious by direct contact and with summer coming, you’re likely to be going barefoot more often. If over-the-counter medications don’t seem to be working, the foot doctor can prescribe a more effective medication.
Fungal Toenails—fungi can also affect your toenails leaving them discolored, thick, and crumbling. Warm, moist places like the insides of boots and closed shoes are the perfect environment for these infections to thrive in. There are several topical treatments and oral medications that used together can help eliminate toenail fungus.
If one of these or another foot condition is making you hesitant to get out your summer shoes, don’t hide your feet. Contact our Wayne, New Jersey office for an appointment by calling: (973) 595-1555 and let our podiatrist, Dr. Paul G. Klein, examine your feet. A prompt diagnosis and proper treatment can help you get your feet looking (and feeling) the way you want just in time for summer fun.
