One of the conditions patients bring to us at Paul Klein, DPM FACFAS, most frequently is heel pain. In fact, studies show that it’s the number one foot complaint in America. Our heel is the first part of the foot to strike the ground when we walk and thus it takes a lot of abuse. It’s also critical to nearly every action we do: jumping, standing, running, walking and climbing. So when your heel hurts, life is going to be unpleasant.
Tracking Down the Source of Pain
Heel pain can be difficult to treat because there are several possible sources of the pain. A large ligament called the plantar fascia runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes. This band of tissue acts sort of like a trampoline for your foot to bounce off of as it takes every step. When the plantar fascia becomes inflamed (due to overuse, a structural malfunction such as flat feet or a tight Achilles tendon) severe pain can occur. Inflammation can also produce bony growths known as spurs to develop which can also significantly increase the pain.
But not all cases of heel pain are linked to the plantar fascia. Rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions such as Reiters disease and Lupus can also be the underlying source. In addition, several nerves pass through the heel area and if these become compressed or entrapped again, heel pain is the result.
Getting Relief
Obviously the first step in relieving heel pain is correctly diagnosing its cause. Our podiatrist, Dr. Paul G. Klein, will use the latest diagnostic technology to get a complete picture of the inside of your foot. Our digital ultrasound diagnostic unit shows the bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles, arteries, veins and nerves of your foot. We are also able to perform nerve testing if that is thought to be the possible cause of your heel pain.
Once the reason behind your heel pain is accurately pinpointed the foot doctor will develop a treatment plan suited specifically to your condition. There are many conservative and surgical options for relieving heel pain. Don’t suffer needlessly. Contactour Wayne office for an appointment at your soonest convenience by calling: 973-595-1555.
