Heel pain treatments have recently improved with the addition to our treatment protocol of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and Topaz Micro Debrider utilizing radiofrequency.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is the latest technology that utilizes the patient’s own blood to repair the damage plantar fascia. A small amount ( approximately 1 ½ ounces) of the patient’s blood is spun in a centrifuge which allows a high concentration of platelets and growth factors to be harvested. Using a ultrasound for guidance , the concentrated tissue graft material is then percutaneously injected into the damaged plantar fascia and flexor digitorum brevis muscle at the level of the heel. This treatment has been successfully utilized to treat :
Ligament Tears, Joint and Disc Injuries; Tendinosis; Muscle Tears; Tennis Elbow and Rotator Cuff Tears. In this way , the bodies own healing ability is utilized to repair damaged tendons.
Topaz is a minimally invasive alternative to surgical procedures for the treatment of plantar fasciosis, Achilles tendonitis and other inflammatory tendon conditions. Topaz utilizes radiowaves transmitted through a 0.8mm wand which is inserted under ultrasound guidance to the level of the tendon or fascia or ligament percutaneously. No scapel incisions are performed. Rather small puncture holes are made over the area of complaint. Procedures are performed on a outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Success rates are presently measured at 92%.
